– plans to transform Georgetown Zoo announced
His Excellency President Dr Irfaan Ali has said the commissioning of the Guyana–China Friendship Park on the West Coast Demerara celebrates decades of shared values and cultural ties between the two nations.
Addressing thousands at the ceremony, President Ali noted that the park sits on lands of deep historical significance, dating back to the arrival of the first Chinese indentured labourers in 1853.
“The opening of this park marks another milestone in our national story, a place where history, friendship and future possibilities come together,” he said.
The President underscored that the park reflects the level of investment his Government is directing into the region, citing projects such as the Del Conte Road, waterfront developments, the upgraded Parika Stelling, and tourism and agricultural initiatives that will transform the area.
The park features pagoda‑style landscaping, footpaths, lighted seating, a football field, basketball and tennis courts, and family recreation spaces.
Meanwhile, President Ali announced that major upgrades will soon begin at the National Zoo and Botanical Gardens, transforming the facility into what he described as “the pride of South America.” The investment will focus on recreation, education, biodiversity awareness, tourism and urban life, and will connect to wider city projects including the cultural heritage walkway, waterfront development and green spaces.
He said the rehabilitation will include gardens and water systems, modern zoo infrastructure, improved animal care and containment, visitor facilities, accessibility upgrades, education spaces, security and operational systems, elevated bridges, pathways and landscape restoration.
The President emphasised that these initiatives are part of a broader vision to modernise Guyana’s urban spaces, making them more inclusive, sustainable and attractive for citizens and visitors alike. He described the projects as “value for money investments” that will deliver long‑term benefits in education, tourism and quality of life.
The commissioning also highlighted Guyana’s strengthening ties with China, with the park serving as a cultural landmark that honours the contributions of Chinese indentured labourers while symbolising contemporary friendship and cooperation.
First Lady Mrs Arya Ali; Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) the Honourable Mark Phillips; Mrs Mignon Bowen‑Phillips; Chinese Ambassador to Guyana HE Yang Yang; and members of Cabinet attended the commissioning.
